Toughened glass is manufactured by heating flat glass to just below its softening temperature (650 °C) and suddenly chilling it with jets of cold air. This results in the outer skins being under powerful compressive stress while the interior maintains severe tensile stress. Consequently, the impact applied to the glass is overcome by the compressive stress on the surfaces to ensure maximum safety during use.
